Asbestos is a group of naturally occurring minerals that are valued for their useful properties such as high tensile strength, thermal insulation, and resistance to chemical reactions. In most cases, they do not evaporate, dissolve, or burn.
Asbestos can cause serious health problems when its fibers are inhaled or ingested. These fibers can become lodged in the lungs, causing lung cancer, mesothelioma and other respiratory illnesses.
Anyone who comes into contact with asbestos-containing materials is at risk of exposure, but those who work in industries such as construction, shipbuilding, and automotive repair are at higher risk.
Due to its' high tensile strength and other beneficial properties, Asbestos fibers were added to a number of building materials that supplemented the overall durability of the products. Some of the more common materials that may contain asbestos include plaster walls and ceilings, drywall/wallboard, joint compounds, CMU block filler, paint coatings, ceiling tiles, adhesives and mastics, boiler/furnace insulation, caulking and sealants, blown attic insulation, HVAC components, pipe insulation and pipe elbow fittings, spray-applied fireproofing, popcorn ceiling textures, textured wall and ceiling surfacing, roofing materials, gasket materials, floor tiles and mastics, sheet flooring (linoleum), sink undercoating, and cement board (transite). Keep in mind, this is just a small percentage of materials that may contain asbestos.
